Outsourcing firm Capita is to take over the contract for electronic tags for criminals from G4S and Serco on an interim basis by April 2014.
G4S and Serco are currently under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office after an audit found instances where the companies were overcharging for tagging but none was taking place, leading to over-billing for tens of millions of pounds. Under the interim arrangement, Capita will manage the delivery of the electronic monitoring service using equipment supplied by G4S and Serco. The Ministry of Justice said that it will have a “far greater oversight over costs and charging than previously, with direct access to the supplier’s systems to increase transparency”.
